Summer is quickly approaching, and that may mean it’s time to buy a new air conditioner. We do want you to invest in a high efficiency air conditioner, but there are things other than a high SEER rating to look for when shopping.
The first think to look for is reliability. Your HVAC system is the most expensive appliance you will buy for your home, so make sure you buy from a reputable dealer not necessarily the cheapest one. Remember, some high efficiency systems qualify for government rebates. You also want to listen to the unit before you buy it. A system doesn’t have to be loud to do its job properly. It does, however, need to maintain a constant temperature and have proper air flow. A system with improper air flow will not maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the house. Some rooms will be cooler than others.
Your HVAC system should also control humidity. Temperature is not the only thing that makes a room comfortable. A cool, damp room is just as uncomfortable as a warm, dry room. Lastly (though definitely not least important), you want to make sure your system emits healthy air. Either look for a system that has an air cleaner already attached, or you can buy one separately and attach it yourself.
