Cash For Caulkers

December 21st, 2009 by Melissa Doyle

President Obama has been creating stimulus package after stimulus package, and while they have helped at the time, there has been no long time effect. His latest stimulus package, however, seems like it will have more long-term impact. Twenty-three billion dollars will be spent over two years, with $6 billion allotted to people who did at least two significant weatherization projects. There will be a list of ten projects such as air sealing, insulation, new light bulbs, and new appliances. Households that perform at least two of these will receive up to $2,000 and households that perform at least four will receive $3,500. Another $12 billion will be set aside for households who undertake a weatherization project that reduces consumption by at least 20 percent. A 20% reduction will get $4000, and each additional 5% will get an additional $1500. Two billion dollars will be set aside for audits to make sure that these changes actually took place. The remaining $3 billion will go toward incentives for companies and contractors. The government will not pay for more than half of any project, but a lot of these changes do pay for themselves eventually and getting this stimulus money will cut that time in half.

Another Reason To Go Green

December 9th, 2009 by Melissa Doyle

Here at AC Doctor, we keep pushing you to go green. The benefits are just so great. Aside from the decreased energy bills, studies are also showing that a green office will increase productivity! The University of San Diego and the CB Richard Ellis Group (they are a commercial real estate group) surveyed 2000 tenants in 154 green buildings and found that employees took an average of 2.9 fewer sick days. That’s a savings of relatively $1,200 per employee! Productivity also increased 5%, creating another $5,000 in profit per employee. Sixty-one percent of tenants said they believed that the healthier working environments helped retain their staff, while 74% said the green offices increased their reputations with their clients. They also reported a 21% decrease in energy bills. Rent for a green office is increased to an average of $30 a square foot versus $27 for regular offices, and there are fewer vacancies. Just a few more money-saving reasons to go green on your next building project!

Time Is Running Out To Get Your Heater Serviced!

December 8th, 2009 by Melissa Doyle

Winter is all but here, have you gotten your heater serviced yet? It should be professionally serviced every year. Take a look at our database and find a contractor nearby that can take care of that for you. Though a professional is best for servicing your system, there are a few things you can do yourself to maintain it. First off, check your thermostat. If you have a programmable thermostat, make sure it’s set properly. Many programmable thermostats have several different settings. You can have one for weekdays when no one is home, one for evenings, and another for weekends. Next, replace your air filters. During the cold season, your filter should be changed at least every 2 months. Lastly, check all air vents. Make sure they are not blocked by furniture and vacuum them out at the start of the cold season so the warm air is not blocked. Anything more should be done by a professional. While making the appointment to get your heater serviced, try and remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned. If it’s been more than 5 years, you should think about getting those cleaned as well. Unless you’re a heavy indoor smoker or have had a major remodel, you only need to clean them every 5 years. Beware the cheap cleanings, they usually have many hidden costs or are not done by a certified professional. The typical cost of a duct cleaning is $400-$500. Most companies offer a free inspection so you can make sure your ducts really do need cleaning, which should include the coils, drain pans, fans and humidifiers. If just one component is missed, it will re-contaminate your whole system. Once your system is professionally serviced and ducts are cleaned, you should have a nice and comfortable winter!
