Headaches, Itchy Eyes, and a Runny Nose

May 26th, 2009 by AJ Nahmad

Wow, the seasons change and the allergies kick in.  I don’t know about you, but my eyes are itchy, my nose is runny, and the headaches are getting annoying.  If you also suffer from seasonal allergies, you feel my pain.

Believe it or not, your HVAC system can work for you or against you in the allergy struggle.  It’s pretty self-explanatory, but whole-home air filters basically purify the air inside your home, removing pollen and other allergens that can drive you crazy. (Learn all the details here)  If you don’t have one of these systems - and it’s easy to get them if you just call an HVAC contractor - your HVAC is blowing these particles all through your home, and trust me, that’s not helping.

Do yourself a favor, invest in indoor air quality

If you’ve already got one of these air filter systems bolted on, write a comment on this blog and share the knowledge.

Escaping the Heat is Only Half the Battle…

May 19th, 2009 by AJ Nahmad

…you also need to escape the humidity.  The good news is that proper HVAC can help with both.  Whole home dehumidifiers are an integral part to keeping your home perfectly comfortable and a great escape from the heat and humidity.  The upgrade is easy since most A/C pros can simply bolt one of these units on to your exisiting symstem.  But this is just a teaser, read up on whole home humidifiers/dehumidifiers here.

BEFORE YOU REPLACE YOUR OLD AIR CONDITIONER, TAKE A LOOK AT HIGH EFFICIENCY AIR CONDITIONERS

May 13th, 2009 by Eric Benishek

I’ve mentioned in several articles that the recent government stimulus package incentivizes us to improve the energy efficiency in our homes with a 30% investment tax credit (capped at $1,500) for qualifying projects.   In many states, the utilies provide additional rebates for high efficiency air conditioners and furnaces.  When you combine the two (tax incentives + rebates) you often pay the same amount for a high efficiency system as you would for a standard efficiency system.   With potential savings of between 10-20% off your utility bill…it’s worth taking a good look at your options.

The Key to Efficiency? Ensure a Quality HVAC Installation

May 12th, 2009 by AJ Nahmad

How can you maximize your heating and cooling efficiency?  Start by making sure your system is installed properly.  If it’s not, it may be running up to 50% less efficienty than its optimal.  50%!!

What do we mean by quality installation?  We spell it out in detail here, but it boils down to  a handful of items: selecting the right size unit (by tonnage), ensuring proper air flow (no leaky ducts), and a proper refrigerant charge.  These are not do it yourself items as you can imagine.

You’ll have to have a professional HVAC contractor perform tests to make sure these items are up to par.  But that doens’t mean this is totally out of your hands…use our Quality Installation Checklist to follow along, ask the right questions, and make sure that pro is acting professionally.  [Then come back to AC Doc and write a review about your experience]

Save Money On Your Utility Bill - It’s As Simple As Changing Your Filter

May 7th, 2009 by Eric Benishek

Many people tell me when asked, “How often do you change (or clean) your air conditioning or furnace filter?” …once or twice a year…or they don’t remember the last time they changed it!   Filters have received a lot of attention in the last decade as we’ve become more aware of air quality in our homes.   The problems begin (”higher utility bills”) as the filter gets clogged and begins to restrict air flow into your home.   Anywhere from 5-15% of the efficiency of your heating and air conditioning system can be lost due to dirty/clogged filters which for the typical home can mean 3% to 8% higher utility bills.    Additionally your system has to work harder which can ultimately shorten the life of the equipment resulting in major expenses down the road.

My recommendation…change your filter a minimum of every other month…it’s worth it!   If you’d like to learn more about filters and your air conditioning systems maintenance, AC Doctor is happy to oblige, just click here.

The Watsco/Carrier Joint Venture Announced Today is Historic and Exciting

May 4th, 2009 by AJ Nahmad

We at AC Doctor want to take a moment to congratulate Watsco (our parent company) and Carrier on their agreement to form a joint venture to sell Carrier, Bryant and Payne brand heating and cooling products in the Sunbelt, Carribbean and Puerto Rico.  These are two great companies, true leaders in our industry, and with their forces combined only good things may come.

For those who would like to learn more, see Watsco’s press release.

Start the cooling season with an Air Conditioner “Tune-Up”

May 1st, 2009 by Eric Benishek

Much of the your air conditioning systems efficiency is lost due to a lack of regular maintenance.   A central air conditioning system should be checked and cleaned once per year preferably just prior to the cooling season.   An inexpensive AC tuneup can be performed by any qualified AC contractor in your area.    Make sure and contact your utility (or check out their website) since many of them will pay you a portion (up to 100%) of the cost to have this done.   The cost of the tuneup even without a rebate or incentive usually pays for itself  within a few months so its a great investment with a very quick return.   If you are looking for an AC contractor to perform an AC tuneup or would like more information click here.

In addition after you’ve had your tuneup performed, you should make it a habit to check and replace your AC systems filter regularly (ideally once every month).   The air restrictions caused by dirty or clogged systems can cost you more in your utility bill in one month than the cost of an annual supply of replacement filters.   More about air filters and their affect on air conditioners in my next blog.
